#10. Swan Island Dahlias (September)

I’d like to kick off this list with a personal favorite of mine. Dahlias remind me of my grandmother (it was her favorite flower, probably like most grandmas honestly) which meant I spent a lot of time searching for the best dahlia farms near Portland.

After several sad attempts we finally hit a jackpot — the Swan Island Dahlias. Swan Island is a scenic 35-minute drive from Portland. Home to a plethora of farms, the island swells with locals in the spring, summer and fall months.

Is it any surprise that an area ripe with farmland would be home to one of the best flower fields near Portland? Spanning an impressive 50 acres, except to find a beautiful display of more than 370 varieties of dahlias.

This beloved dahlia farm near Portland is open from August to September (closed Mondays/Tuesdays) and guests are welcome to order dahlias for planting. Or heck, purchase a few freshly cut dahlias and make someone’s day!

Dahlia Fields Near Portland (Plan B)

Local’s Tip: Another great option for dahlias near Portland is the Grateful Vineyard in Hood River. If you’re up for the 1.5 hour drive you’ll be rewarded with a beautiful Oregon dahlia farm taking center stage while Mt. Hood looms in the background.

#9. Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden

No list of the best spots to see flowers in Portland is complete without mentioning the stunning Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden.

Offering seven beautiful acres for visitors to explore, You won’t see many cherry blossoms in the garden (stroll the neighborhood if you’re itching for some), but you will find a dizzying display of colorful rhododendrons and azaleas.

These spring blooms start blooming as early as February, but don’t hit peak bloom until April (and even May). But believe me when I tell you they are worth the wait, you’ll be wowed by a stunning pop of spring color!

  • Best time to visit: April through May
  • Hours: Open daily from 6am to 10pm
  • Admission: $5 from March 1 to September 1 (FREE on Mondays), free the rest of the year.

#8. Hulda Klager Lilac Gardens (Early May)

Located in Woodland, Washington, I first learned about the Hulda Klager Lilac Gardens from my mom. She’s enamored with lilacs and was determined to get my aging grandma out of the house. Seems like this lilac garden near Portland fit the bill!

They liked it so much they ended up returning every year (made a tradition out of it). Woodland is a 30-minute drive from Portland and at $5 per person, this is a great way to spend a sunny weekend in May.

This garden is the passion project of a famed lilac developer named Hulda Klager. The garden includes a charming 1800s home surrounded by a mind-boggling display of lilacs.

If you’re looking for lilacs near Portland but don’t want to make the trek, I have an alternative. A closer, albeit smaller, option is to visit the stunning Duniway Lilac Garden in Portland (near OHSU).

The Lilac Garden in Duniway Park has 225 lilac plants with more than 125 varieties. One clear standout is the ancient Japanese Lilac Tree that blooms in June. If you love the smell of lilacs or spring blooms in general, you won’t want to miss this beautiful flower garden in Portland.

#7. Sunflowers at West Union Gardens (August)

Those looking for sunflower fields near Portland need not look further than the West Union Gardens in Hillsboro. This sunflower field had some of the biggest flowers I’d ever seen (the size of dinner plates!)

This family-run farm is an exceptional I recommend to anyone looking for where to find sunflowers near Portland. The family behind the farm is a husband-and-wife duo, Cheryl and Jeff Boden, who began farming at West Union in 1987.

This is one of the most popular sunflower fields near Portland, so you’ll want to plan accordingly. If your schedule allows, try to visit during the weekday. Also, make sure to read the farm rules before your visit.

P.S. If you’re looking for more sunflower fields near Portland, I suggest Rasmussen Farms and Grateful Vineyard in Hood River.

#6. Schreiner’s Iris Gardens (May)

The Schreiner’s Iris Gardens in Salem, Oregon are some of the prettiest flower fields near Portland. Dazzling spectators with vibrant violent irises and lupine, this is the spot to be on a warm late-summer day.

With admission priced at $5 per person, this isn’t a free flower field near Portland but the admission is well worth it. Grab some picnic items, good friends and spend the afternoon talking about nothing at all in the midst of irises.

#5. Cherry Blossoms at the Portland Waterfront

The cherry blossoms at Tom McCall Waterfront Park are the cream of the crop. Folks often ask me where to see flowers in Portland and I never fail to point out this gem. From Late March to mid-April, the cherry blossoms are in full bloom (a true sight to behold).

The 100 Akebono cherry trees that line the waterfront were gifted by the Japanese Grain Importers Association in 1990, and you can believe me when I tell you it’s the gift that keeps on giving. Every year, the trees explode with unbelievable delicate flowers that completely change the landscape to the delight of onlookers.

But fair warning, this spot gets very busy during the spring season because it’s the best spot to see spring blooms in Portland. Plan ahead and try to arrive early if you want photos without crowds.

Plus, nothing beats that sunrise glow (which is definitely worth an early wake up call).

  • Best time to visit for cherry blossoms: Mid March to early April.
  • Hours: Open daily from 5am to midnight, there is no admission fee.

#4. The Portland Rose Garden (Oct-June)

Portland is often referred to as the City of Roses because the climate creates the perfect conditions for growing roses. Nowhere is this more evident than at the exceptional Portland Rose Garden in Washington Park.

Portland’s beloved rose garden is both the largest rose garden in America and the oldest. Home to an impressive 650+ varieties of roses and more than 10,000+ bushes, it’s my top recommendation for folks asking where to see flowers in Portland.

The history of the rose garden is equally fascinating. Originally started in 1915 by Jesse Currey, (an Oregon Journal editor and rose hobbyist), the rose garden was created in an effort to preserve roses susceptible to eradication during World War I.

Fun Fact: The Portland International Rose Test Garden attracts an estimated 700,000 visitors annually.

#3. Hood River Lavender Farms (Late July)

Hood River Lavender Farm is a definitely a contender for the title of best flower fields in Oregon. It neighbors a ton of other great lavender fields in Hood River, but there’s something special about this one that’s worth the stop.

Imagine never-ending rows of stunning lavender in full bloom with Mount Adams and Mt. Hood looming in the distance. Stave off the heat with a lavender lemonade or, better yet, lavender ice cream from the farm store.

You’re welcome to cut your own bouquet while visiting, which makes a great souvenir from a day well spent.

What’s more, Hood River Lavender Farm is located right next to one of my favorite wineries in Hood River, Stave & Stone Winery. Relax with a glass of wine, surrounded by lavender, and feel the afternoon melt away.

Then, when you’ve had your fill of blissful relaxation (can you ever?), hop over to the U-pick stand for sheers and grab yourself a bouquet to take home. Yep, this is a u-pick flower farm near Portland (the perks keep adding up, eh?).

#2. Adelman Peony Gardens (May-June)

Located in Salem, Adelman Peony Gardens is a 45-minute ride from Portland but peony enthusiasts know the trek is worthwhile. Often regarded as one of the best flower fields in Portland, during peak bloom these peony fields come alive with vibrant colors that span the gamut.

This is one of the best peony farms near Portland so it gets very busy during peak bloom (late May/early June). But it’s not hard to see why, the farm spans 25 acres, making this one of the largest flower farms near Portland.

#1. Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival (Mid-April)

Without doubt, the Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival (in Woodburn) is the most beloved flower field near Portland. Every year, like clockwork, thousands of visitors flock from all corners of the state to see these beautiful tulips for themselves.

Originally started by a married couple, the tulip festival offers visitors an opportunity to frolic through 15 acres of densely planted vibrant tulip blooms. They plant more than 1 million tulips every year! Try visiting when the hot air balloons are out for an extra-special experience.

Woodburn is about 45-minutes drive from Portland, but I’m hardly the first to tell you the drive is worthwhile. At $20 per person, this is the priciest flower field near Portland, but that doesn’t stop the tickets from selling out (book early!).
