The Best 3 Gluten Free Bagels in New York City

I’m on the hunt to find the best gluten-free bagels in NYC… check out my top 3 joints for one of New York’s fave foods (GF edition ofc!).

Okay, someone has to say it… being gluten-free in New York City is about as easy as going to outer space after getting a degree in comm (I’m a comm degree, I can make this joke). It just is not a thing.

In the city operating on black coffee and the sweet, glutenous grain that is wheat… in the city that is known for the world’s best slice of pizza, bagels from multi-generational recipes, and entire neighborhoods dedicated to pasta and dumplings… finding gluten-free options in NYC CAN BE TOUGH.

But should our guts have to suffer to experience the deliciousness that is New York!? *a resounding “NO, LAU!”*After all, we all know the hottest girls have gut problems;)

So let’s just say I’ve taken it upon myself (you’re SO WELCOME) to hit the hot NYC pavement to discover the best gluten-free alternatives to the best of NYC and share them with my loves, YOU! *my Venmo is @Lauonthego for any S-tier human that so desires to contribute to my train fare, tysm xo ily lmao*

Without further ado…

Here are the BEST 3 gluten-free bagels in New York City

Modern Bread & Bakery

Location: Upper West Side of Manhattan (472 Columbus Avenue)

Price: $$$ (of $$$$$) — my lox bagel was around $15. A bagel by itself is around $3.

The Lau Down: this is hands down my FAVORITE gluten-free bagel shop in NYC. Their bagels are huge, they’re the perfect balance of doughy and crusty, and genuinely taste like a normal bagel. Modern is not only a bagel shop, but also a whole bakery that is ENTIRELY gluten-free (literally talk dirty to me omfg). They have four flavors of bagels… and I’m a purist, so I always go for the everything bagel. Their focaccia is also very good (yes, I’m a slut for a good focacc).

Also… something to note is that the bagel shop is also entirely kosher, so this is not the spot for a bacon, egg, & cheese. But their lox is TO DIE FOR.

Allergies: if you’re allergic to nuts or seeds, this is not the spot for you. They have tofu cream cheese, so it is vegan friendly! It is entirely gluten-free and made in a GF facility.

Hours: 8:00am-9:30pm Sunday-Friday (closed on Saturdays)

Tompkins Square Bagels

Location: East Village of Manhattan (165 Avenue A and 184 2nd Avenue)

Price: $$ (of $$$$$) — my bacon egg + cheese was around $13 (I think)

The Lau Down: Tompkins Square Bagels is THE SPOT if you’re looking for the best GF bacon egg + cheese in the city. Don’t sleep on getting a BEC with scallion cream cheese, too. They have A TON of cream cheese flavor options, many of them unique sweet flavors, as well as vegan tofu cream cheese. Great location in the East Village that’s easy to get to if you’re in downtown.

Also… Tompkins Square is primarily a normal, gluten bagel shop that has GF options. As somebody who is gluten intolerant, the potential cross contamination has never bothered me. However, if you’re celiac or have extreme intolerance to gluten, this might pose a little more of a risk for you.

Allergies: if you’re allergic to nuts or seeds, this is not the spot for you. They have tofu cream cheese, so it is vegan friendly! Their gluten-free bagels are amazing, but there is potential for cross contamination.

Hours: 7:00am-5:00pm every day

Brooklyn Bagel & Coffee Company

Location: Queens (multiple locations)

Price: $$ (of $$$$$) — my friend picked up my bagel so I’m honestly not positive what it cost

The Lau Down: Brooklyn Bagel is def a bagel staple in the Queens/Astoria area — a recommendation from my friend who has lived in Queens for 6 years! If you’re hitting up this spot for a GF bagel, definitely make sure to get there early, as they go FAST. I got a lox on plain with scallion cream cheese, and it was LOADED UP, BABY. It was around 2pm when getting the bagel so they just had plain left, but I def need to go back to try out their everything bagel.

Also… like Tompkins Square, Brooklyn Bagel is a regular bagel shop with gluten-free options. If you’re celiac or have extreme intolerance to gluten, I’d make my way to Modern Bagel on the west side.

Allergies: if you’re allergic to nuts or seeds, this is not the spot for you. They have tofu cream cheese, so it is vegan friendly! It is entirely gluten-free and made in a GF facility.

Hours: varies based on location, but typically 6am/7am-2pm/3pm

Have you checked out any of these bagel spots in NYC? Let me know if you have in the comments, or if you have a different favorite! I WILL check it out.

xo hugs n kisses n all the gut health to u cuties,Lau.
